1. 1

Brunhilde is a woman in the old German story that Wagner made into his long opera cycle, The Ring of the Nibelung. In that story she is a princess and a warrior — one of the battle-maidens of legend. On stage she is usually shown large and strong, fair-haired, in armour, with a proud, set face. Wagner’s German spelling is Brünnhilde; English books also write Brunhild or Brynhild, from the older Norse and German tales. That opera picture is so famous that some people use “a Brunhilde” for a large, strong, fierce-looking woman. That second use is often , and it is not what the name is for.
