A bruiser is a big, strong person — usually a man — who looks as if he could hurt you, and who often likes a fight or a fierce argument. It can mean a hard hitter (a boxer, a tough player in a team sport) or just a large, rough-looking man. People also say it with a half-smile, not only as an insult: “He’s a bit of a bruiser” can sound almost fond. It is informal. You might hear it of a woman, but that is less usual and can sound . It does not mean “fit” or “strong” in a kind, gym way; it hints at knocks, weight, and a willingness to push.
