To browbeat someone is to push them into doing what you want by being hard and a little — a stern face, a sharp voice, questions that do not let them rest — not usually by hitting them. You browbeat a person into signing, into keeping quiet, into giving in. It is about power: the stronger speaker leans on the weaker one until they fold. The word is a little formal; you will see it in news and in complaints about bosses, police, or lawyers. Though actually, it is not only about a dark look. Talk can browbeat too, if it is relentless and meant to scare someone into yes.
組成brow (the forehead) + beat (to hit). The old picture is of “beating” someone with a heavy look from under your brows.
