Brooklyn is one of the five big parts of New York City. The city is split into five boroughs, and Brooklyn is one of them. It sits across the water from Manhattan, and for a long time it was a place of docks, factories, and ships from many countries. People of many have made their homes there, and that mix is part of how the place is known. If you hear “a Brooklyn accent,” that is a strong way of speaking English that many people can pick out at once. The name is not English in origin: Dutch named it after Breukelen, and that came from a word for wet, land. Today it is still a real working part of the city, though actually many streets are now famous for art, food, and young people moving in — the old port story and the new story live side by side.
