The Bronx is one of the five boroughs of New York City, and also a county. It lies north of Manhattan. It holds the Bronx Zoo and Yankee Stadium, where the New York Yankees play baseball. Outsiders often picture it as only poor and full of crime. That picture grew from a real, hard stretch — especially the South Bronx in the late twentieth century — but it is not true of the whole Bronx. There are quiet streets, parks, and a huge mix of languages and food. In English this is the borough you almost always say with the: the Bronx, not bare Bronx, in ordinary talk. A Bronx cheer is a rude raspberry sound named after the place, used far beyond New York. Though actually, people from the Bronx are often proud of it, and tired of the old joke.
