Broadway is a long, famous street in New York City. Along one stretch of it there are many theatres, and that street plus the streets around it is the centre of the city's theatre world. People say on Broadway for a big, professional stage show there. They contrast it with off-Broadway (smaller theatres nearby) and with London's West End, which is the same idea in Britain. The name is simply “broad way”: a wide road. Old English already used those words for wide roads, and English towns called Broadway appear in records from 1086. New York's street is the same kind of name, which then became the name of the whole theatre industry. Though actually, other cities have a Broadway too. In Winnipeg, Canada, the government building stands on Broadway, so people there may say Broadway to mean the government. When say Broadway, they almost always mean New York theatre.
