A broadsword is a heavy sword with a wide, flat blade, made to cut as much as to point. Think of the kind in stories of old Scotland or European fighting, not the thin fencing sword that only stabs. From broad + sword — the name is as plain as it looks. Museums and history books use it; everyday English almost never does, unless someone is joking or talking about films and games. There is no special modern weapon hiding in the word, and it is not a sword for a large person. A verb exists on paper, but you will almost only meet the noun.
