The Broads — always with the, and with a capital B — are a network of rivers and wide, shallow lakes in Norfolk, and a little in Suffolk, in the east of England. People go there on holiday in small boats and move slowly from village to village. A broad in this local sense is one of those wide stretches of water. It is a national park, flat and quiet, famous for birds as well as sailing. Though actually they are not simply “the sea coming inland.” The lakes, we now know, were old peat that flooded centuries ago; the rivers do eventually lead out toward the sea. In holiday English, the Broads means that whole watery district, not one single lake.
