Broadmoor is the name of a special hospital in the UK, not a normal hospital and not a normal prison. People sent there have done very serious, often violent things, and they are also mentally ill, so the law treats them as patients who must be kept in a very secure place. It stands on open land in Berkshire, west of London. British newspapers have used the name for more than a hundred years, so in UK English it carries a heavy, slightly feeling. Students outside Britain seldom need it except in news or crime stories. There are a couple of other hospitals of this kind in England; Broadmoor is simply the name people know.
