A broadleaved tree or plant has wide, flat leaves, not the thin, sharp ones that look like needles. Oak, beech, and the trees along a street are like this; pine and fir are not. People also write broad-leaved, with a dash, and scientists often say broadleaf. The word is at home in gardens, farms, and nature writing; you rarely need it in ordinary chat. Though actually, “wide leaves” is not the same as “loses its leaves in winter.” Many broadleaved trees do drop their leaves, but some, like holly, keep them all year. Learners often mix this word up with evergreen, because the tidy picture in their head is “flat leaves = winter-bare, needles = always green,” and real woods are messier than that.
