Brixton is a district in south London. For many decades it has been home to a large Caribbean community — especially families with roots in Jamaica — and also to people from Africa and many other places. It is known for its market, food, music (reggae and later London sounds that grew in the same streets), and a strong, mixed street culture. News stories sometimes mention Brixton when they talk about protest, policing, or London’s Black British life; songs mention it as a real neighbourhood, not a postcard. Though actually, like many famous areas, it is not one thing: some streets are busy and cheap-feeling, some have become much more expensive, and the old picture of ‘Caribbean Brixton’ is still true in part and incomplete in part. It is a place name.
