On a gun, the breech is the back end of the barrel — the part you open to put the bullets, or the cartridge, in. A breech-loading gun is loaded from this back end, not down the front of the barrel. Hunters, soldiers, and people who work with firearms use the word; it is technical, not chat. Though actually the name is older than guns. It comes from an old word for clothing over the hips and thighs, the ‘bottom’ of the body, and the back of the gun took that ‘rear’ idea. Do not mix it with breach, which is a gap or the breaking of a rule. They only sound alike.
