Brechtian describes plays, staging, or ideas in the manner of Bertolt Brecht, a German writer of plays and poems (1898–1956). He is known especially for The Threepenny Opera, The Caucasian Chalk Circle, and Mother Courage. His plays carry political ideas, and in shape they can feel a little like old Greek drama: a story shown so that you judge it, not only feel it. Theatre people call a show Brechtian when it does not hide that you are in a theatre. Actors may speak to the audience; a song may cut the story open; you are asked to think. It is a specialist, quite formal word. You would not use it in everyday chat unless you were talking about theatre on purpose.
