    If a voice is breathy, you can hear the speaker’s breath coming out with the words — a soft leak of air under the sound. Singers and actors sometimes choose a breathy voice on purpose, to sound close, gentle, or a little intimate. It is about the colour of the voice, not about being tired. Someone who has just run upstairs is out of breath; that sounds and rough. A breathy voice can be calm and planned. You meet the word in music writing and in notes about film or theatre. Neutral, a bit specialist.
