A Breathalyzer is the machine the police use: you blow into it, and it shows whether you have drunk too much alcohol to drive. It started as a trademark of Smith & Wesson, so careful writing may keep the capital B. In ordinary speech people say breathalyzer for any such , not only that brand — the way a brand name becomes the everyday word for the thing. Police hold a small one at the ; a fuller test may happen at the station. It reads alcohol on the breath, not in the blood. The name is a blend of breath and analyzer, and the verb was made from it later.
