If a woman breast-feeds, she feeds her baby with milk from her own breast, not from a bottle. You can say it with no object (she breast-feeds) or with one (she breast-feeds the baby). The spelling often keeps the , breast-feed; breastfeeding is the usual noun for the whole practice. Though actually, people sometimes use the word loosely for any feeding with a mother's milk, even from a bottle after she has pumped it. In careful talk, that is bottle-feeding; breast-feeding is feeding at the breast. It is a normal family and hospital word, not a rude one, though some people feel shy and say nurse the baby instead. Fathers and other cannot breast-feed in the strict sense.
