Breakdancing is a street dance style with a lot of floor work — spinning on your back or your head, dropping down onto your hands, freezing suddenly in a hard position. It started in New York in the 1970s among young people, mostly Black and Puerto Rican, and it grew up together with hip-hop music. The name comes from the music: DJs would play the 'break' of a record, the drums-only part, over and over, and dancers waited for that section to do their best moves. So a breakdancer is, at the root, someone who dances to the breaks. It is a noun, usually uncountable: 'She's into breakdancing', 'a breakdancing class'. The verb is breakdance ('he breakdances'), and a person is a breakdancer. One thing worth knowing: 'breakdancing' is largely an outsiders' word. It came from journalists in the 1980s. Inside the community, dancers usually say b-boying or b-girling, and call themselves b-boys and b-girls. Neither word is rude, but if you say 'breakdancing' to a serious dancer, they may gently correct you. Since the dance entered the Olympics in 2024 under the name 'breaking', that shorter word is becoming common too.
