The breadwinner is the person in a family who earns the money that feeds and houses the others. People used to talk as if there was one breadwinner, often the father; today a household may have two, or the main earner may be anyone. Bread here stands for food and living costs. Winner is from an older sense of win meaning to earn, not to come first in a race. Related words in nearby languages use the same bread-plus-earning picture for a livelihood.
