A brasserie is a relaxed restaurant, usually with a French feel, where you can eat a proper meal without the place being stiff or very expensive. In French the word first meant a brewery — a place that made beer — and then the eating house that went with it. English borrowed the word and kept the French sound, so it still feels a little stylish even when the food is simple: steak, fries, a salad, a glass of beer or wine. It is not fast food from a window, and it is not a grand hotel room either.
