A brainy person learns easily and thinks quickly. It is an informal, slightly playful word for clever — the kind of thing you might say about a who gets the hard questions, or a child who loves puzzles. It usually describes people, not things. It often feels warm, but it can also sound a little teasing, as if you are pointing at the “clever one” in the room. It is not as stiff as intelligent, and not as wide as smart, which can also mean well dressed or street-wise. You would not usually write brainy on a school report.
