To brag is to talk too proudly about what you have done, what you own, or how good you are. We use it when we do not like that kind of talk — the word already leans toward “please stop.” A friend who did well can be glad; a friend who brags can make other people feel small. You can brag about a test, a car, a holiday. It is everyday English, not stiff or formal. Though actually, people sometimes brag in a joking way among friends, and then it stings less — but the word itself still says the pride is too much. Brag is usually a verb; you will also hear “bragging rights” when a team or a person wants the right to talk big after a win.

組成From Middle English braggen (“to make a loud noise; to speak boastfully”). The earlier story is not settled. It may be tied to Middle English brag (“prideful; spirited”), which is probably Celtic; or to Old Norse bragr (“best; foremost; poetry”); or, through Old English, to Old Norse braka (“to creak”). Scholars do not agree.
