A Bradshaw was a book that listed when trains left and arrived, all over Britain. From the nineteenth century until about the middle of the twentieth, if you wanted to plan a trip by rail, you looked it up in Bradshaw. People even said “Bradshaw” the way we might say “the ,” as if the man’s name were the book itself. George Bradshaw started the guide; after he died, the name stayed on the cover. You will not find a new Bradshaw in a station now — trains use other lists, and later screens. When someone mentions Bradshaw today, they are usually talking about the old days of British railways, or about a character in a story who still carries one. Though actually, it looks exactly like a family name, because that is what it was first.
組成The book took its name from George Bradshaw, who published it. His family name comes from Old English brād (“broad”) + sceaga (“thicket, a small wood”), the same pieces as English broad and shaw.
