Bradford is a city in the north of England, in Yorkshire. For a long time it was a busy factory town. People there made a great deal of cloth from wool — coats, blankets, and cloth to sell far away — so books still call it a centre of the woollen trade. The mills needed many workers, and people moved in. Later, a great many families from South Asia made their home there, and they are still a large part of the city; this is not new colour in a , it is ordinary life. Though actually, in British English, when people say “Asian” about Bradford, they usually mean families with roots in places like Pakistan, India or Bangladesh — not East Asia, which is what “Asian” often means in American English. That gap surprises . In news and in school, Bradford almost always means this city. The same spelling can be a family name, and there is even an old mixed drink called a Bradford (a martini you shake), but those are other stories.
組成From Old English brād (“broad, wide”) + ford (“a shallow place where you can walk across a river”). It began as a place name: a wide river crossing.
