bps is short for bits per second. It is a measurement of how fast a computer, a , or a network line can send or receive information. A bit is the smallest piece of computer information, just a 1 or a 0. So 1,000 bps means a thousand of those tiny pieces pass by each second. Old were sold in bps; today people more often say kbps, Mbps, or Gbps, which are only bigger versions of the same idea. It is a technical label, used on boxes, settings, and spec sheets, not in friendly chat.
