Bowwow is the sound grown-ups make when they play at being a dog, or when they talk to a very small child about a dog. A toddler points, and someone says “Bowwow!” the way they might say “” for a cow. It is nursery talk, not a word adults use with each other except as a joke, or when they slip into baby language on purpose. You will also hear it as a little noun for that barky noise itself, and some families even call the dog “the bowwow” when they are speaking to a child — though actually that is the same playful sound-word, stretched a bit, not a serious name for the animal. In writing it sometimes has a : bow-wow. It is warm, silly, and firmly at home with picture books and toddlers, not with school essays.
