A bowman is a soldier from the past whose weapon was a bow — an archer, especially in armies that fought with . You will see it in history writing, stories about medieval wars, and games that copy that world. It is a transparent compound: a bow-man, a man with a bow. In careful modern English, archer is the more general word; bowman sounds a little older and more military, as if you are talking about a type of soldier in a line of battle, not just anyone who can shoot. Though actually the same spelling has another life on the water: a bowman can be the person who sits at the bow, the front of a boat. That is a different job and a different piece of bow. This entry is the archer.
組成From Middle English boweman, bouman: bow (the weapon) + -man. (The boat sense is a separate making: bow of a ship + -man.)
