A bouzouki is a Greek instrument with a long neck and a round body. You play it by picking the metal strings, so people often say it is “like a guitar” — though actually it is closer to a lute, and the sound is brighter and more ringing. It is at the centre of a lot of Greek popular music, the kind you hear in tavernas and old rebetiko songs. English speakers usually keep the Greek name; they do not have a English word for it. You will meet it in writing about music, travel, and Greek culture, not in everyday British or American chat.

組成Borrowed from Greek μπουζούκι (bouzoúki). That Greek word comes from Turkish bozuk, “out of order, rotten” — the name stuck to the instrument. Doublet of buzuq.
