Bourbon is a kind of American whisky (in the US they spell it whiskey). It is made mostly from corn and aged in new barrels whose insides have been burnt, which gives it a sweet vanilla-and-oak taste. People drink it neat, on ice, or in cocktails. The name is disputed: it is generally taken to come from Bourbon County, Kentucky, but it may also come from Bourbon Street in New Orleans. Both of those names come from the French royal family, the Bourbons, named for the lordship of Bourbon-l'Archambault; that town’s name goes back to Borvo, a Celtic god of hot springs, from an old root to do with foam and boiling. Though actually, not every brown American spirit is bourbon — rye is a different mix of grain, and some bottles follow extra local rules. In a Taiwan bar you order 波本.
