    An old adjective meaning that you ought to do something because it is morally right — a duty that ties you, not just a rule on paper. You will almost only meet it in the frozen phrase bounden duty: ‘It is my bounden duty to tell you.’ Nobody in ordinary English now says ‘a bounden task’ or ‘I feel bounden.’ The picture is that duty has bound you. It sounds formal and a little churchy or ceremonial — oaths, speeches, old novels. Using it outside bounden duty will make you sound as if you have out of a history play, which can be funny if you mean it that way, and stiff if you do not.
