A climbing plant from hot countries that scrambles up walls, fences, and trees. People grow it for the strong colour — magenta, purple, pink, red, orange, or white. Though actually, the bright ‘flowers’ you notice are not the true flowers. They are thin, paper-like leaves around a tiny real flower in the middle, which is why they last so long on the plant and even after you cut them. In Taiwan it is an everyday garden plant: school walls, alley , rooftops. It loves sun and does not mind dry weather. The English name is the scientists’ name, taken from a French admiral, Louis Antoine de Bougainville; you do not need his story to use the word. treat it as an ordinary noun, singular or plural.
