A boudoir is a woman’s private room — historically a bedroom, or a small sitting room next to it, where she could dress, receive a close friend, or simply be alone. The French verb bouder means “to sulk” or “to pout”; the room was, in the old joke of the word, somewhere to go and sulk. In English it sounds fancy, a little old-fashioned, and a little French on purpose.
