A bottom-up plan starts with the small, practical pieces — what people actually do, what a local office knows, what you can build this week — and only later draws the big picture. You do not begin with a grand idea from the top and push it down. Managers, software people, and researchers use this pair a lot: bottom-up versus top-down. It is a fairly formal workplace word, not something you say about making dinner, though the idea is simple: build from the ground, do not start from the sky. Though actually, real organisations mix both; the tidy pair is tidier than the work. Bottom-up here is not “upside down”, and it is not the toast bottoms up! with a drink.
