    British informal. You planned to do something scary or brave, and at the last moment you decided not to, because you were afraid. Often 'bottle out of something' or 'bottle out of doing something'. No object goes inside it. British people also say 'lose your bottle' — 'bottle' here means courage, though honestly nobody is sure why. Americans say 'chicken out' for the same thing.
