A bosun is the person on a ship who organises the deck work and looks after the ropes, boats, and other gear. The crew come to the bosun when something on deck needs doing or fixing. Dictionaries often say 'officer', and in the loose sense that is fair — this person is in charge of that work. Though actually, on many ships the bosun is not a commissioned officer like the captain; they are the experienced hand who runs the sailors on deck. You say it BO-sun. The older spelling is boatswain, which looks much harder than it sounds.
