Bossanova is a kind of Brazilian music, and also the dance that goes with it. It grew in Brazil in the 1950s and 1960s out of samba, but it is quieter and cooler: a soft guitar, a gentle swing, and a mood that later mixed easily with jazz. The song people point to is often The Girl from Ipanema. In English you will almost always see it written as two words, bossa nova; bossanova as one word is the same thing, just closed up. It is not tango, and it is not loud carnival samba — it is the late, relaxed cousin. People use the word for the music even when nobody in the room is dancing.
