The Bosporus is the narrow sea that cuts through Istanbul and separates the European part of Turkey from the Asian part. It joins the Black Sea in the north to the Sea of Marmara in the south; from there ships can go on through the toward the Aegean and the Mediterranean. Though people sometimes talk as if it were a river, it is salt water — a strait — and it is busy with real ships, not only with history-book names. Istanbul lives on both banks, so the city itself sits in two continents with this water in the middle. You will also see Bosphorus: same place, only the spelling with ph is very common in English.
