A borstal was a special kind of prison in Britain for young people who had broken the law but were not old enough for an ordinary adult prison. The first one was at a place called Borstal, near Rochester in Kent, and the name of the village stuck to the whole system. Staff were supposed to train and discipline the young people, not only lock them up — though actually life there could be very hard. The official borstal system ended in the 1980s; Britain now uses other names, such as young offender institutions. You will still meet the word in older books and films, and older British people may still say it. It is not used in American law.
