Borneo is a huge island in southeast Asia, in a group of many islands. It is one of the largest islands in the world. The land is not one country: the north is part of Malaysia, a small piece on the north coast is the country of , and most of the rest belongs to Indonesia (that Indonesian side is called Kalimantan). People know it for thick tropical forest, rivers, and animals such as orangutans. Many millions of people live there. The English name comes from Portuguese Borneo, probably going back in the end to a name meaning “island of Varuna” (a Hindu god of the waters). , the small country on the island, is the same old name by another path.
組成From Portuguese Borneo, probably ultimately from Sanskrit varuṇa-dvīpa, “island of Varuna,” and therefore a doublet of Brunei.
