    The boonies means the same thing as the boondocks: a place with no town nearby. It is even more informal — slang, really. You will hear “out in the boonies” more than you will see it in careful writing. Like boondocks, it almost always takes the: the boonies. Though actually it is just a short, playful cut-down of boondocks, as if the singular were boony. US soldiers in the Vietnam War were already using it by 1964 for the countryside, as opposed to the city (). It has nothing to do with boon (“a help”).
