    A boogeyman is a scary someone who is not really there — the unnamed creature grown-ups mention to make children behave or go to sleep. “Be good or the boogeyman will get you.” Nobody agrees what it looks like; that is the point. Boogeyman is a common American spelling; bogeyman is the other spelling, same word. Though actually, adults use it about real people too, often : a paper’s “boogeyman” is someone they want you to fear. Informal. Stories, films, and political talk all use it.
