Bonn is a city in western Germany, on the . From 1949 until 1990 it was the capital of the Federal Republic of Germany — that is, West Germany — while the country was split. Berlin was in a strange, divided position then, and West Germany's government sat in Bonn instead. After the two Germanys came back together, the capital moved to Berlin. That is the fact students need. The messy extra is this: Bonn did not simply empty out. It is still a real city, and some government work stayed there for years, so older people may still talk about Bonn as a place of offices and , not only as 'the old capital'. On a map it is not Berlin, not Munich, not Hamburg. In English we keep the German name.
