Bonn is a city in western Germany, on the Rhine. From 1949 until 1990 it was the capital of the Federal Republic of Germany — that is, West Germany — while the country was split. Berlin was in a strange, divided position then, and West Germany's government sat in Bonn instead. After the two Germanys came back together, the capital moved to Berlin.
