Bombastic language is full of long words that sound important but have no real meaning. A bombastic speech, a bombastic style, a bombastic claim. You can call a person bombastic too, but the word lands first on the language. It is a critic’s word: a bit formal, a bit , used when someone is showing off with empty fine talk. Though actually, it comes from in the old “padding, ” sense, not from bombs. People hear bomb and bombard in it, and that may colour how it feels — loud, heavy — but that is a mix-up of sound, not the real family.

組成From bombast (“padding, stuffing”) + -ic, 18th century. The empty-talk meaning grew from stuffing. The likeness to bomb and bombard is probably only a later echo in people’s ears.
