As a verb, to bolster something means to support it, strengthen it, or help it hold up — you can bolster someone's confidence, bolster an economy, or bolster an argument with more evidence. It suggests giving extra help to something that's already there but needs to be stronger. As a noun, a bolster is a long, firm pillow, often used to prop yourself up or to a bed or sofa — this is actually the original, older meaning, and the verb grew out of the idea of propping something up the way a bolster props up your back.
