Bolivia is a country in the west of South America. Much of the west is high and mountainous (the ); the east is lower and greener. It has no sea coast — Chile and Peru sit between Bolivia and the ocean — and that lost coastline is still a sore point in Bolivian history. Its neighbours are Brazil, , Argentina, Chile, and Peru. More than ten million people live there. Though actually, “the capital” is messier than a tidy map suggests: Sucre is the official, constitutional capital, but the government sits in La Paz, which is the city most mean. The name is Spanish Bolivia, “land of Bolívar,” from Simón Bolívar, the leader who fought Spanish rule in South America, plus -ia, an ending used to make country names.
