1. 1

Boise is the capital city of Idaho, a state in the northwest of the United States. It is a proper name, so you always capitalise it. English speakers say it BOY-see, not “bwah-zay,” even though the name comes from French. French speakers called the river there la rivière boisée, “the wooded river,” and the city kept a form of that name. Students meet Boise in US geography, in the news, and as a place people fly to. It does not mean “woods” in English today; it is only the city’s name.
