Something bog-standard is the plain version: not special, not interesting, nothing extra. A bog-standard phone has no fancy tricks; a bog-standard meal is just ordinary food. It is British informal. You can say it at work or in a newspaper; it is a little cool about the thing, but it is not a swear word. Americans almost never use it. Though actually, bog in British slang means a toilet, so the phrase looks ruder than it acts. Nobody is sure where it came from. It probably started as box-standard — the normal one that comes in a box — and then the first half got mixed up, perhaps with bog meaning toilet, or bog meaning wet wild land.
