A Boer is a white South African whose family goes back to Dutch farmers who came to South Africa in the 1600s. In and Dutch, boer simply means “farmer.” In English, though, it is not a job word — it names that people. You meet it most in history: the Boer Wars, when Boer states fought Britain around 1900. A wider name used today is . Boer can sound old, and in South Africa it is not a light word to put on someone, because the history around it is heavy. In English you usually say it like “” (the vowel in “or”), or sometimes with two beats, BOO-er. It is often written with a capital B.
組成From Afrikaans Boer, from boer, “farmer.” The same old “farmer” root also gives English boor and bower, and German Bauer.
