Boccia is a precision ball sport, played sitting down, and it is a big Paralympic event. Players throw or roll coloured balls so they stop as close as possible to a smaller white target ball. The idea is cousin to Italian bocce and to lawn bowls: nearest to the white ball wins. Dictionaries often say it is a game for people in wheelchairs. That is mostly fair — many players use wheelchairs — though actually the sport is for athletes who have severe difficulty controlling their movement; some use a ramp and a rather than throwing with their own hands. It is a serious competition, with quiet concentration, not a playground game. In English the name is said BOT-cha, not 'boh-see-ah'. The tone is neutral and technical.

組成Borrowed from Italian boccia, 'ball'. That came from an old spoken-Latin word *buttia, borrowed from Byzantine Greek, and that from Ancient Greek βοῦττις, a kind of vessel, perhaps from a language before Greek. English butt in the old sense 'wooden cask' is a distant doublet: same old root, different road. The sport's name is simply 'ball'.
