A bobbin is a small round object that you wind thread onto. On a machine it sits underneath and holds the lower thread; the upper thread comes from the spool on top, and the two lock together to make a stitch. People also wind thread on bobbins for lace and some weaving. It is an ordinary workshop word if you , and a little unknown if you don't. Though actually, English speakers themselves mix up bobbin and spool: the spool is often the bigger one on top; the bobbin is the small one that drops into the machine. That small one is the meaning meet first.
