A boater is a hard straw hat with a flat top and a fairly flat brim. It does not fold. It sits stiff on the head, unlike a soft sun hat. People wore boaters in summer for outings on the water, and later you see them in old school photos, boat , and period films. The name comes from those trips: straw hats were what people put on in the sun on canals and rivers, and this stiff shape kept the name. It is rather old-fashioned, more at home in British English than in a Taiwan hat shop — here you would usually just say straw hat unless you mean this exact hard, flat shape. Though actually, boater can also mean a person who goes out in boats. That is a different use. This entry is the hat.
